GPM - The MPG Illusion
To know the gas savings when comparing cars, GPM can be subtracted. MPG cannot.
If you are a car buyer or car dealer, click here to see the gas savings of different vehicles.

About The MPG Illusion Site

This website explores the psychology of environmental decisions with a specific focus on improving green house gas (GHG) decisions.

The name of the site is based on a Science paper called "The MPG Illusion." A brief summary of the problems with MPG and benefits of GPM can be found here and here.

GPM Table (Gallons per 10,000 Miles)

The following table shows how different levels of MPG roughly translate to gallons of gas consumed over 10,000 miles (GP10K):

10.0 MPG = 1000 GP10K
11.0 MPG = 900 GP10K
12.5 MPG = 800 GP10K
14.0 MPG = 700 GP10K
16.5 MPG = 600 GP10K
20.0 MPG = 500 GP10K
25.0 MPG = 400 GP10K
33.0 MPG = 300 GP10K
50.0 MPG = 200 GP10K

Removing cars in the teens and improving them to the 20s saves hundreds of gallons of gas per 10,000 miles. If you own an inefficient car, it will "pay for itself" to replace it.
